When Lorraine Sumners’ doctor, and a medical specialist both recommended exercise to address mobility issues she was having, she realized she was going to have to choose a local gym. Up to that point her fitness activity involved walking and stretching so she didn’t have the gym experience to be looking for equipment specifics quite yet. Sumners did know however, the kind of environment she wanted to spend her time in.

Up to that point her fitness activity involved walking and stretching so she didn’t have the gym experience to be looking for equipment specifics quite yet. Sumners did know however, what she was looking for over-all.

“First and foremost,” she says, “would be the friendliness & helpfulness of the staff and what the gym had to offer.”

Choosing a fitness facility or gym can be a daunting task for many people, for a variety of reasons. Sumners says that for her it was age that was her biggest challenge.

“Being older, my main objective was to feel comfortable and be in an atmosphere that was friendly & helpful. Gridiron has not disappointed me.”

She says the staff were helpful right away, filling her in on everything there was available to get her started. Sumners felt she needed a little more one to one help so teamed up and trained with Gridiron owner, Tammy Schmidt.

“Since helping me, she has been nothing but kind, considerate and very helpful with meeting my needs and setting me up on a training program to deal with my restrictions,” says Sumners. She takes note of the things she’s gained liked confidence, motivation and even tips for home exercises.

Schmidt says that it is actually Sumners that does the inspiring and not the other way around.

“She has literally renewed my passion for fitness on a personal level,” states Schmidt. “She was so eager to ensure that the rest of her life was lived to its fullest, not in pain and being able to do what she wants without limitations…”

Mind set counts a lot when you’re implementing new routines, regardless of your age, but in the end it’s always about whether or not you show up for yourself. And Sumner is determined to do just that; stretching 7 days per week, and getting in her gym workout twice per week.

Just because she is a gym newbie at this age, does not mean she came through the doors without goals for her first year at Gridiron.

“My goal is strengthening my muscles and improve my mobility. In one month, I am already experiencing positive changes. I am so pleased!”

Age might have been a factor when she went looking for a fitness centre but ironically, since becoming a member, Sumners says that age really isn’t important at her gym, just a desire to be healthier. “The day I had the courage to join the gym after so many years, I couldn’t have made a better choice than by entering the doors of Gridiron.”
